10:10 pm - Once I spent ten weeks reading Emma and 3 Musketeers over and over and over.

Classics Karen Likes:

Pride and Prejudice
Emma
Northanger Abbey
A Tale of Two Cities
The Three Musketeers
Les Miserables
The Iliad
The Odyssey
The Frogs
Lysistrata

Most of Shakespeare's plays, except Titus Andronicus and A Winter's Tale, and the ones no one has read like King John because I also haven't read them.

Classics Karen Doesn't Like:

Mansfield Park
Juvenal's Satires, the ass
Everything else Dickens wrote
The entire catalogue of the modernist novel
ETA: Jane Eyre
Wuthering Heights

It seems to be included on the Likes list, one should include 1) humour and/or
2) swordfights, yo.

ETA 2: I forgot a MAJOR exception, which is Euripides' The Trojan Woman. No swordfights, no humour, complete downer of a story complete with child murder and female slavery and yet I love it the most.

Also! I got to make the donation to the Alannah and Madline Foundation! Behind the cut is proof of the collected donation. A number of people redeemed their pledges by donating separately, so the total of all donations was actually $1 381.

To me, that is big person money. Thank you all very much for taking part, and I'll be doing it again next year for sure!

Donation number stuff )

Merlin/Arthur und ein wenig Gen )

Merlin Rec List. Update 11.07.2009.

Merlin: OT4 collaboration - Unbreakable. So toll! Wheeeeeeee!!! Summary: In which Merlin protects everyone protecting him and everyone kick ass.

Wieder was gelernt!

In a world where Hunters and Witches have formed an alliance to protect humans from Rogues, Dean Winchester is a Master Hunter. The last of a long line of Hunters, Dean is on the trail of Azazel, one of the most powerful Rogues that has ever existed. Knowing that he can't Hunt the Rogue alone, Dean visits the city of Nouvelle Orleans and the High Witch who holds it. She offers him her heir, Samuel, and the two leave. In their search for Azazel, they find secrets buried beneath secrets and a stunning revelation that could change the entire world.

06:30 am - How to play with your food

posted by Neil
I'm in Chicago right now, for ALA: the annual meeting of the American Library Association. I've been to a couple of them before and have always had a marvellous time -- once, with people like Art Spiegelman and Scott McCloud and Colleen Doran explaining to curious librarians what graphic novels were and why they should have them in their libraries, another time getting to visit New Orleans for the first time Post-Katrina, when I went to two dinners with Poppy Z Brite, and one of them was the first time Poppy's husband, chef Chris DeBarr, ever cooked for me*.

When I was in Melbourne, five years ago, Poppy was a guest of honour with me, and somewhere back then it was decided that we would be going to Alinea, a Chicago restaurant of remarkable coolness. The years went by and I was never in Chicago for long, and Katrina happened, and once Poppy went back to New Orleans she did not want to leave, but we knew one day it would happen.

And tonight it did. Poppy flew up from Chicago and took me to dinner. It was expensive, and, I only discovered at the end of the meal, Poppy was paying. (This is a big public thank you.)

The service and friendliness and sense of enjoyment from the Alinea staff was remarkable. I've had, on rare occasions, food that was as good, and, rarely, I've had food that was better, but I do not ever recall any meal that was as much fun to eat. 23 Courses (hmm, very illuminati) of things that melted or popped or squrunched in your mouth in astounding ways.

I think my favourite not-actually-putting-something-in-my-mouth moment was when the table was covered with bubbling belching dry-ice smoke, and I asked Poppy very nicely if she wouldn't mind saying, "Tonight, my creature, I shall give you Life!" for me, and, bless her, she did.

If anyone reading this is at ALA, I'm doing two signings at the HarperCollins booth 2011, one at 1.00pm on Saturday, the other on 9.00am on Monday (which should have some amusement value). Also a panel on Monday at 1:30pm on the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. The rest of the time is filled with interviews, receptions, speeches and such.

I'm actually here to receive the Newbery Medal for The Graveyard Book. Which will be presented on Sunday night, and for which I have written (and already recorded) a speech. (Which will be played if I forget how to talk on Sunday night. It's possible.)

And I want to thank Harper Collins for indulging me, and keeping up the free version of The Graveyard Book on the mousecircus website all that time. You can still listen to (or watch) me read The Graveyard Book, chapter by chapter, across America, at http://www.mousecircus.com/videotour.aspx. You can also buy it.

(And to answer a sharp-eyed questioner, yes, there are a couple of changes in the latest printing of The Graveyard Book; I fixed an error in astronomy I'd made, and a misspelled foreign word, and fixed some paragraphs in the acknowledgments that were truncated in the original US edition.)

(And that reminds me: yes, I will be at San Diego Comic Con briefly on Friday July 24th, to do a panel with Henry Selick about Coraline, and a one hour signing afterwards. I'll be at the Eisner Awards for a bit that night, then will zoom across town to the Benefit concert that Amanda Palmer and Vermillion Lies are doing for the CBLDF.)

*Chris says people have been asking for "The Mezze of Destruction", the code-phrase that tells him they were sent from this blog, at the Green Goddess, and getting special extras -- restaurant Easter Eggs, as it were, and I have been getting happy messages from people who have eaten there who tried it. And, almost needless to say, lived.

My family and I just got a sweet 8 week old Havanese male puppy, a little over 24 hours ago. His name is McGee. I've posted links to the pictures because the file size is HUGE... well it was when I uploaded them! Everyone keeps telling me how cute and adorable he is, so I had to share! First time posting.

11:20 pm - OMG! Fanservice! Ahaha!

XD

So: back to The Shelf.

Some days you do the best you can just to keep it all afloat. Gladdy and I settled down into a hard-working routine--me trying to finish my e-book project, and her trying to unravel the alethiometer prophecy, such as it was (next up: tea leaves).

A truly harrowing experience, let me tell you )

10:35 am - Well that was sudden.

I arrived at my parents place yesterday and my mom and I got talking and then I had a chat with my dad and we decided that I'm going to move back in with them as soon as possible, for as long as it takes me to graduate and find a job. All my classes and exams are done, I was planning to stay mostly with them while I'm working on my thesis anyway and I'm almost certain that whatever job I eventually end up with won't be in Heidelberg so it makes sense to give up my apartment and save the rent.

I'm pretty excited to live closer to my friends again, even if it's just for a couple of months. And I'm so ridiculously relieved that I have at least the beginnings of a plan for the next few months. Thinking more than a few weeks ahead had been starting to freak me out and turn me into an anxious mess. I hate feeling like a failure because everyone else I know seems to have their future already planned out and everything ready to go.

Now I just have to hope that I'll manage to get out of my lease and find a new tenant for my apartment, preferably one that could be ready to move in by the beginning of august.

03:44 am - new to the light

Hello all.
I am just beginning yoga, just this week actually, and I am very much in love.
I'm 21 and trying to find my way to a healthier, happier existence. I have recently been very interested in Taoism and from that, searched for more ways to find peace. So, I found yoga =)

I was wondering how you all got started in yoga and what are the best ways to learn?
I'd like to do it on a daily basis but I don't really know how to go about doing it myself... and I really enjoy the classes. There's a semi-local studio by me that has $10 classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Unfortunately, I am in the medical field and I work night shift (7pm to 7am) and almost always keep this vampire-like schedule. So I can only go to the Tuesday evening classes, Gentle Yoga. Which is great because it's a beginner class, very slow and relaxing, but the instructor told me right away that she assumed I'd probably want something with a little more movement and energy. She's already right ;)

I love the class, but with my schedule I'm also considering videos or self training?

Are classes the best way to learn?
Any books or videos that you would recommend?

09:50 pm - Bakasana?

Hello all, I'm new here.. and relatively new to yoga... my name is Sonja, and I've been practicing for a few months now, and I'm in love with yoga.

Question for you all:

I have been trying to move into crow pose, but I always seem to fall flat on my face.

I think my problem with moving into this pose is that I'm trying to force my knees to stay in my armpits. I have heard many people say that this is the correct way to move into the pose, but I've also seen many people kind of bow their knees outside of their triceps, and rest their shins more on their arms. Is their a correct way to move into this? Is resting your shins on your triceps and letting your knees move slightly out to the side not as good as keeping your knees tight into your armpits?

I'll leavce you with a yoga quote that resonates with me:

“These days, my practice is teaching me to embrace imperfection: to have compassion for all the ways things haven’t turned out as I planned, in my body and in my life – for the ways things keep falling apart, and failing, and breaking down. It’s less about fixing things, and more about learning to be present for exactly what is.” Anne Cushman
